Excerpted from Second Wind for the Second Half (Zondervan, released January 1999) I have often thought that the best way to define a person's character would be to seek out the particular mental or moral attitude in which, when it came upon them, they felt themselves most deeply and intensely active and alive. At such moments there is a voice inside which speaks and says, "This is the real me!" William James, 1842-1910 In September my wife, our eighteen-year-old son, and I were sitting together in a little diner where we would share our last meal together.
