The Big Idea: Because I am a Stranger and Alien, I will __________________ to the glory of God.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about why everything seems so hard. There are very few things in life that are easy, and often it seems like we face direct opposition. The Bible actually has some great answers to this problem. One of them comes when we remember who we are and where we are.

In this message we seek to understand our true identity and live it out in a mixed-up world.

The right leadership at the right time

Man Leading and Running

Everything boils down to leadership. To successfully implement an all-inclusive men's discipleship ministry (or for that matter any worthwhile idea) requires three kinds of leadership: visionary, strategic, and operational. Without the right kind of leadership at the right time, it's unlikely you will be able to sustain a men's discipleship ministry in your church.

Most leaders will be a little of each, but usually one tendency dominates. And just as a chameleon changes colors, every leader adapts to the situation at hand based upon where they find themselves on the continuum in Figure 1. Still, as a leader you will have a primary or default mode to which you naturally migrate. Once you know your basic tendency, you can save a lot of time and heartache by not trying to be somebody you're not. You also will know the other kinds of leadership you need to recruit. Read more.

New Book from Pat Morley

Man Alive

You Don't Have to Settle. Over the last four decades, Pat Morley has met one-on-one with thousands of men. Most of them know that Jesus promised "a rich and satisfying life" (John 10:10), but too many are confused about what that looks like. In fact, it is estimated that 90 percent of Christian men lead lukewarm, stagnant, defeated lives--and they hate it. Pat discusses seven different needs men have, and how they can hold a man back from reaching his spiritual potential. There are great resources to help you use the book as an outreach tool or in a small group setting as well.

Becoming a Man Alive is a short booklet that introduces the issues from the book and invites men to go deeper. And the Man Alive Small Group DVD provides a short video vignette to make your small group discussions richer.

You can become the man God created you to be. You can experience a powerful life transformed by Christ. Click here for information and to order the book, booklet and DVDs today!

Case for Christ

Church signs have started popping up around the country with a similar saying: "Open every Sunday from Christmas to Easter." Of course, churches are trying to use humor to remind people that they can go to church between Christmas and Easter, as opposed to only on Christmas and Easter. Many churches swell with CEO's on those holidays (Christmas & Easter Only), who then go back to their normal pattern of life that gives a nod to God and prayer, but does not revolve around a relationship with Him.

Now is the time to start preparing for those who will "drop by" church on Easter Sunday. You can put a copy of one of the best-selling and most effective apologetic books in recent times, Lee Strobel's The Case for Christ for less than $2 a person. A seasoned journalist, Strobel chases down the biggest story in history. Is Jesus the divine Son of God? What reason is there to believe that he is?  The legally trained investigative reporter examines the claims of Christ, by retracing his own spiritual journey, reaching the hard-won yet satisfying verdict that Jesus is God's unique Son. Written in the style of a blockbuster investigative report, The Case for Christ consults a dozen authorities on Jesus.

This hard-hitting book is a riveting quest for the truth about history's most compelling figure. Many that take it home from an Easter or Holy Week service will be compelled to come back and find out more about Him - well before Christmas rolls around.

Available in cases of 12 or 48. Order by March 28 to ensure delivery before Easter. Click here to order.

areadirectorsArea Directors Report: The Network is Growing!

Take the Next StepBy the time you read this, 49 candidates will have ventured to Man in the Mirror's offices in Orlando for face-to-face interviews to become Area Directors. The first 19 Area Directors were commissioned and completed their initial week of training. Ministry Partner Development training, provided in partnership with Cru, will equip them with the tools necessary to begin raising the support necessary to become a full-time Area Director in their region. By this time next year, Area Directors will be building an area-wide Coalition for Men's Discipleship, recruiting pastors, lay leaders and churches to the vision of discipling every man in every church.

What about you? Is God calling you to the vocation of men's discipleship? We are looking for 330 passionate, committed followers of Christ who are called to serve pastors and train leaders so that the men in their churches can be transformed. Go to www.mimareadirectors.org to watch a video about becoming an Area Director, and to read the job description, frequently asked questions, and lots more information about becoming a Man in the Mirror Area Director.

superbowlSuper Bowl Outreach Success!

football

The Super Bowl may be over for this year, but there are many more opportunities to reach men with the gospel through sporting events.

Jason Ellerbeck shows you practical and strategic ways to make a Super Bowl event a success to share the gospel -- these are great ideas for other game broadcasts for evangelism outreaches, or a way to kick-off your ministry to men. Here is part of what he has to say in his article:

...high-quality resources are the way to go. Keeping the Super Bowl vibe and experience going are important.

One resource I'd recommend is from Sports Spectrum, the top Christian sports magazine in the country. They developed a Super Bowl halftime video every year called "Power to Win." A long-time tradition, Power to Win helps the lost see Christ in a new way and provides great encouragement and hope to those who have been walking with Christ for decades. Read the rest of the article here.

ineffectiveHow to Be an Ineffective Leader
from Leadership Journal

In this article Steven James gives seven habits to ensure your ineffectiveness as a leader. Aim low, go it alone, wait until the last minute...avoid these pitfalls at all costs. One of the habits is "don't plan ahead." He writes, "Don't fall into the trap of writing down your goals and objectives, or even worse, handcuffing yourself to specific times when you're supposed to feel obligated to do them. Instead, respond to things as they come up. Put off big projects until you have large chunks of uninterrupted time to accomplish them, or when you feel inspired. Then try to complete the task with one herculean effort." Read the full article here.
marriagetodayLoving Others
Excerpted from Equipping the Man in the Mirror
equipping jan 2012Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves. Philippians 2:3

When Jesus tells us to love one another, what is He really asking us to do? We find a great definition of love in Philippians 2:3: "In humility consider others better than yourselves."

Love actively works for someone else's good rather than its own. When you love someone, you feel naturally concerned for what they want and what seems best for them. Your personal interests recede to the background as you promote the interests of another. As a freshman in college, David woke up every morning and asked himself, "Self, what do you want to do today?" When he met Ruthie during his sophomore year, that all changed. Instead of waking up and saying, "What do I want to do today?" he asked, "I wonder what Ruthie is going to do today? I wonder what we could do together." He went from being selfish to being "otherish."

Model "otherishness" to your children. Show them by your own actions that love cares about the welfare of others; that it focuses on the other person instead of oneself. Find specific ways to meet needs in your neighborhood, church, community, and the world.

yourealeaderYou're a Leader!

by Pat Morley

No one ever told me, "You're a leader!" Yet as I became a man, I was leading everywhere. But because no one had ever "released" or "blessed" me as a leader, I was well in my mid 40s before I started to get comfortable with people calling me a leader. Before then, I always deflected it.

I started telling certain men, "You're a leader!" The responses have been exhilarating. In every case you can feel their joy, recognition, and hope. In many cases you can also feel their discomfort. That's when I get to tell them my story. We commiserate. But by the time we're finished, they feel like they have been "acknowledged," "released," and "commissioned" to go and be a leader for the glory of God.

How about you? Have you received the blessing, "You're a leader!"?

It has always been that in our darkest hours unexpected leaders rise up. These leaders speak with a clarity of vision that galvanizes our resolve to bring about social change. These often previously obscure leaders tap into the dissonance we feel. They articulate a compelling, resonant message. They often live difficult lives that prepare them "for such a time as this." They are not necessarily the most impressive looking, the most articulate, the brightest, or the most successful. Yet, these servant leaders willingly sacrifice their lives for the greater good.

It is a dark hour for the family. There exists an urgent need for leaders who will see the crisis, and realize they have been prepared "for such a time as this." If this makes your heart soar and ache, then let me be the one to bless you: "You're a leader!"

From Weekly Briefing, January 28, 2007. Sign up here to receive the Weekly Briefing, an email specifically designed to equip, encourage and challenge you as a leader in the Battle for Men's Souls.

"Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility."

pastoringResource Spotlight: Pastoring Men
pastoringmencoverMuch has been made about the "men problem." You can hear about it on Oprah. You can read about it in Time. Everyone is concerned about it. Many address the consequences of it, yet very few people are doing anything that will change the root of it. No man fails on purpose, yet our society is wrought with the results. And our well-intentioned solutions often don't deal with the root issue. What solution does Pastoring Men offer? Disciple men. The purpose of Pastoring Men is to equip you to effectively reach all of your men. Men are hard to reach. But be assured--if you do, they will change the world. Order here.

Commissioning Ceremony - Man in the Mirror Area Directors

Feb 20 Posted by MIM Web Team in Man in the Mirror Blog 0
God was glorified on Saturday, February 18 as we held a luncheon to commission the first 18 Man in the Mirror Area Directors. They just completed their initial week of training. Many of their wives also attended. Their unbridled joy, determination, and sense of calling turned it into a celebration. We're at the front end of a goal to mobilize 330 AD's over the next 2 years so that every church in America can have access to a consultant to help them more effectively disciple men. - Patrick Morley

Lessons from a Selfish Prophet

Aug 19 Posted by MIM Web Team in Man in the Mirror Blog 0

This week's message is ready to view ( link )

This week, guest speaker David Delk, talks about ...

Lessons from a Selfish Prophet

Jonah 4

David comments, "It's so easy to take our blessings for granted, especially when we face tough times. Yet, a self-oriented perspective ultimately harms us and everyone around us. How do we keep on believing the truth, and then live it out? In this message, we will see how God can use a selfish prophet to teach us how to align our priorities with His. Come ready to be recharged and encouraged for your calling as a man!"

Dissecting Abraham

Genesis 13

When someone is honored, respected, and successful, it's tempting to think, "Sure, it's easy for him. God is blessing him even though he did nothing to deserve it." That's certainly how you might be tempted to respond after reading today's text about Abraham. You could even resent the success of someone like that-especially if you happened to feel dishonored, disrespected, and unsuccessful. That person could be a work or business rival, a friend, a ministry associate, or even a wife or child! Join us as we dissect Abraham and learn how to emulate-and not resent-one of the most successful men in human history.

It's going to be a great day!

Warmly in Christ,

To God Be The Glory!

Jul 12 Posted by MIM Web Team in Man in the Mirror Blog 0

A few weeks ago hundreds of thousands of men received a book or DVD from their church on Father’s Day. Our partners helped make this happen - what a privilige to be a part of such a large scale movement of God in the lives of men. Please pray that God would use these resources to open the hearts and minds of many men for His glory.

We’ve been training church leaders in the No Man Left Behind model for nearly ten years. We recently saw some incredible survey feedback about the impact of this training...

Churches that  intentionally applied the model added an average of 138 men in 2 ½ years, going from 291 men to 429 men. Those that did not intentionally apply the model started out slightly larger on average, with 450 men. But they only added 37 men, instead of 138. So churches that intentionally applied the model grew their number of men by 47.6%; churches that did not grew by 8.2%.

We are so grateful for our partners. Would you consider a significant gift to help us prepare for a rich fall season of ministry? God is at work in the lives of men for His glory.

God's New Thing

Jun 17 Posted by MIM Web Team in Man in the Mirror Blog 0

This week's message is now available (link).

This week's message is from David Delk, President of Man in the Mirror, and is called....

God's New Thing

Isaiah 43:1-7, 16-21

David says,

"Many men I interact with fall into two camps:
  1. Some are stuck - they feel like the struggles and difficulties of their life are simply too much to overcome.
  2. Others have settled - it's subtle, but many men end up with an "I'm doing good enough" mentality.
But what if God wants to do something new in our lives for His glory? How does that happen? Don't live as if your tomorrow will simply be another yesterday. Hear how God changes men from the inside out."

I know you will be encouraged by David's message.

The attacks of the enemy...We must be doing something great for the Kingdom!

Jun 07 Posted by Brett Clemmer in The Field Network 0

Many people will tell you, when you feel like the enemy is attacking what you are trying to do, that means you're on the right track. We must be on the right track then!

We have had website hacks and attacks, processing problems, shipping issues and sickness sweeping through the ministry. The work of the Lord prevails, though! Through it all, 125,000+ Golf's Sacred Journey books, 20,000+ Man Code DVD's plus plenty of The Man in the Mirror, The Holiness of God, Wild at Heart and other great books for men are going out the door to churches around the WORLD for Father's Day. June 19 is going to be a great day for the Kingdom.

The DVD's are particularly exciting, as this is the first time we've ever done one. It features Mark Driscoll's message on Marriage and Men, Craig Groeschel's message on the Warrior Way, Pat Morley's message on Cultural vs. Biblical Christianity, and David Delk's message on Relying on the Gospel. We've had a great response. We increased our order at the last minute and are probably going to have to order more. Praise God!

Keep praying for the cause of men's discipleship, and for the effects of the gospel to be felt for the first time in thousands of men's hearts on Father's Day.

All-Inclusive Ministry to Men!

All-Inclusive Ministry to Men by David Delk
Volume 195  --   May 11, 2011

Picture a typical men's ministry at a typical church. If we were to make a list of activities men would be doing over the next several months, what would make the list? Men's small groups, perhaps a weekly Bible Study or monthly breakfast, a service project, a mission trip, sports, maybe a retreat.

Now, think about the responsibilities and tasks that committed men will be doing at your church in the next week that are not part of the list above. They'll be doing things like teaching adult classes, leading small groups for couples/families, singing in the choir or praise team, playing musical instruments, working with audio/visual equipment, coaching sports teams, doing maintenance work around the church, serving in the nursery, caring for the poor and needy, teaching elementary boys, leading a boy scout troop, working with the youth group, visiting the area assisted living home, and on and on.

Does it really make sense to promote a "men's ministry" that excludes all this incredible ministry being done by men in your church? We don't think so.

We suggest you kill the term "men's ministry" and instead start talking about an all-inclusive ministry to men.

The two overriding principles of an all-inclusive men's ministry are:

1. God has called you to disciple every willing man in your church and community, not just those who are currently coming to your men's only events. An all-inclusive men's ministry includes strategies for discipling all your men, however they choose to connect with your church.

2. Everything that any man does with your church is ministry to men. An all-inclusive  ministry to men tries to maximize the kingdom impact of every interaction with every man, no matter the setting.

This concept really crystallized when a church I worked with during a consulting weekend shared with me one of their "problems:" lots of young fathers in the community were being reached through their family sports program, getting involved in marriage and children's events, going through leadership training, and serving in leadership positions in the church--all without ever being involved in their "men's ministry." Together we were able to see that this wasn't a problem at all; they just needed to expand their vision of what a ministry to men was all about.

One great advantage of an all-inclusive ministry to men is that it helps every man feel like they're a part of what God is doing through the men of the church. When you begin to celebrate all the ways that men are connected and serving you will have a new unity and momentum among your men.

For instance, one church calls their ministry Iron Men. To help every man feel a part of what God is doing, they always refer to the men of the church as Iron Men. If you go to church there--even for one week--you are an Iron Man. Almost every time there is an announcement to the men, whether it is in service or elsewhere, the statement is made, "Every man in our church is an Iron Man."

An all-inclusive ministry mindset transforms how you think about success in your ministry to men. It's natural for men's leaders to think of success in terms of how many men are involved in certain activities and the impact on their lives. So a leader desperately wants men to come to the weekly breakfast, or the annual retreat, or participate in the service project. Of course these are all good things, but measuring them may not have anything to do with how effective your church is with men.

The only true measure of success in ministry to men is this: Is our church producing mature male disciples? If the answer to that question is yes, then you have an effective ministry to men, even if you don't do a single "men's only" activity or even if nobody comes to the ones you do. Don't be mad at them for not coming. Instead, ask the next question "How are we producing disciples?" Now quit your ineffective men's activity and invest in the things God is using in men's lives.

The role of a leadership team in an all-inclusive ministry to men is to pour your support and resources into the efforts that are producing these disciples, even if they are co-ed or run by different "ministries" in the church. Of course every church will likely need some "men's only" activities, but these serve the larger process and are not an end in themselves.

So how do you get started with an all-inclusive ministry to men?

One great way to get started is to think about the two or three most significant ministry efforts your church will undertake in the next year. Perhaps you do a big community outreach at Thanksgiving, a large Christmas musical, a new member weekend four times a year, a big family day in the Spring, or a summer kid's camp for the children in the community.

Whatever the two or three items are that make the list, these are likely also some of the best opportunities your church has for ministry to men. Let me give you examples from actual churches.

  • One church's men's leadership team realized that the night of Vacation Bible School when the children sang for their parents was perhaps their best men's outreach opportunity of the entire year. This children's ministry event provided them with 30 or 40 unchurched men--yet they had never intentionally connected with them because it was not "men's ministry."

When they realized their error, they built a plan to meet these dads and offer them a next step. Because they had a golf outing coming up several weeks after the VBS, they set up a putting green outside the worship center so the kids and dads could be part of a contest. Then they connected with the men and gave them information about the upcoming golf outing.
  • One church realized they had never done anything to connect with the 50 or more unchurched men who sent their kids to the church's preschool. They made plans to get with the school director and plan a father/child day with games and prizes so they could meet these men and give them some next steps.
  • A church wanted to build more male leaders, so they were thinking about implementing a leadership curriculum for men. When we talked about where their current male leaders were being raised up, they identified a ministry that formed serving teams to meet needs in the community. Rather than try to establish a new ministry, they decided to get more men connected to the ministry that was already working.
  • Another church has a major family festival for their community in the fall with thousands of attendees. The men's leadership team realized there were hundreds of unchurched men who came with their families. They brainstormed ideas to set up a "ring the bell with a sledgehammer" game to meet these men and offer them opportunities to connect.
  • A church of 600 people had over 700 men participate in their recreation ministry, but the men's leaders had never considered how to leverage these connections because it was part of another ministry team. They worked with the head of the recreation team to identify the best opportunities to connect with these men.
  • Finally, a church did a live nativity for their community that had thousands of families walk through. The men's leadership team realized this would be a great opportunity to connect with some unchurched dads. They brainstormed ways to offer dads a special gift so they could connect with them at the event.

What about your church? Choose one or two opportunities to get behind so you can start building an all-inclusive ministry to men. How could you leverage your major ministry initiatives next year to make them even more effective with men?

That's just the first step. Next, you need to get some leaders together, then talk and pray about how God might make all your church's efforts work together to help men become passionate disciples of Jesus Christ. You'll want to build a seamless process for men using all the ministry activities of your church.
