What does a praise band have to do with men's discipleship? Sitting in church last Sunday, I was struck by the important role that contemporary music and musicians play in many of our churches. Perhaps more than with any other skill, hobby, or interest, there is a clear path for musicians to exercise their gifts in the church. And so many young musicians get their start through church life. For instance, look at the number of American Idol finalists who sing in their churches. And some significant percentage of 18-to-25 year olds who perform music regularly in America are doing so in or for churches (as compared to at clubs, bars, weddings, parties, etc.).
