47. Pride Pride is a gender issue, and the deadliest sin. C. S. Lewis said in Mere Christianity: There is one vice of which no man in the world is free. Which everyone in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else, and of which hardly any people, except Christians ever imagine they themselves are guilty. I have heard people admit that they are bad tempered or that they cannot keep their heads about girls or drink. Or even that they are cowards. I do not think that I have ever heard anyone who was not a Christian accuse himself of this vice. . . . There is no fault that make a man more unpopular and no fault of which we are more unconscious of in ourselves. The more we have it ourselves the more we dislike it in others. The vice I am talking about is pride or self conceit. And the virtue opposite to it in Christian morals is called humility. There is a right kind of pride and a wrong kind. Teach your men the difference between being proud of their son for getting a hit, (what I call Type I), and looking down on others because their sons didn't (Type II). Pride Type I is a healthy sense of self without comparison to others, because the heart is right. Pride Type II is an inordinate opinion of one's own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing or conduct. Humility is a modest sense of one's importance, rank, etc. The apostle Paul has written, "Each one should test his own actions.
