If you take virtually every problem in America today, at the root of it you will find the failure of a man (e.g. 93% of prisoners are male and 85% of these come from fatherless homes). Today there are approximately 98,000,000 men in America, 63,000,000 of which don't know Christ. Only 8,000,000 of these are active in discipleship. This would be the equivalent of 12 guys playing on a football team and only 1 of them knowing how to play football.

Now, no man fails on purpose – most wake up in the morning wanting to succeed.

Our desire at Man in the Mirror is to come along side pastors and men’s ministry leaders who are equipping men for success.

If I could only make one observation about how men are doing, I would say, "Men are tired." Physically tired, yes, but also emotionally, relationally, psychologically, and financially tired--exhausted by the pace of a culture that requires more energy than they have to give.

These men don't come to church, at least initially, looking for "work." They are tired. Jesus didn't say, "Come to me all you are weary and burdened, and I will give you more work to do." He offers--make that promises--them rest. Make sure your church delivers what Jesus promised.

You will have to teach your men how to rest. Rest is a highly neglected priority. First, give your men permission to not work sixty hours a week. God will provide. Second, teach men to find their rest in Christ by spending time with Him. Third, I think every man needs a couple of hours a day to himself to recharge. This might include his private devotions, a visit to the gym, a hobby, a sport, reading a book, a date with his wife, a movie with his children, or watching television.

A lot of men never feel like they are doing enough to make money. They don't have enough faith to trust God and rest. Challenge these men to put God's Word to the test. Other men never feel like they are doing enough to serve God. They are riddled with guilt. Tell them, "It's okay just to come and sit when that's what you need to do."
