30. The Great Commission Teach your men to embrace the Great Commission. More millions of people and more billions of dollars have been mobilized by Jesus' brief message found in Matthew's gospel than by any other speech in recorded history. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:18-20) This is the most compact distillation of the Christian mission ever uttered. Our final marching orders from Jesus are, "Go and make disciples." Those orders still stand. They have not been amended, altered, or rescinded. The central mission of the church--the overarching goal--is to "make disciples." For men, it's all there. Authority. Challenge. Mission. Adventure. Power. Direction. Purpose. Comfort. Eternal Security. It is our task. It is our mission. And it is great. Discipleship is the process by which we become civilized. There is one, and only one, way any of us can win the battle for our soul. It is simple and concrete. We need to become disciples of Jesus Christ. So challenge your men not only to become disciples, but also to participate in the great work of making disciples themselves: "And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others" (2 Timothy 2:2).
