If you take virtually every problem in America today, at the root of it you will find the failure of a man (e.g. 93% of prisoners are male and 85% of these come from fatherless homes). Today there are approximately 98,000,000 men in America, 63,000,000 of which don't know Christ. Only 8,000,000 of these are active in discipleship. This would be the equivalent of 12 guys playing on a football team and only 1 of them knowing how to play football.

Now, no man fails on purpose – most wake up in the morning wanting to succeed.

Our desire at Man in the Mirror is to come along side pastors and men’s ministry leaders who are equipping men for success.

51. The Rat Race

Picture men, lots of men, under pressure, zooming down the fast lanes of life, straining to keep pace. Some are oblivious to what they're doing. Some are starting to wonder about it. Others are weary. Still others have "hit the wall."

In the process of pursuing their career goals, many men neglect their wives emotionally, slowly, the two of them grow apart. Taking a cue from dad, kids today often run in their own mini-rat races, and dads sometimes feel left out and unappreciated. Twenty years later it slowly dawns on these men that they gave their best years to careers that promised what they couldn't deliver.

As a result, many men have been knocked off balance. Some ask honest questions: "How can I be so successful and so unfulfilled at the same time? Is this all there is?" The rat race charges an expensive toll. It will take everything a man is willing to give.

What is the rat race? As noted in chapter 4, it is the conflict between who a man is created to be and who he is tempted to be. It is the endless pursuit of an ever-increasing prosperity that ends in frustration rather than fulfillment. Tired, pressured, and restless--many of your men have a pervasive lack of contentment. The price of pace is peace. We have created a culture that requires more energy than men have to give.

How do men get caught up in the rat race? In Galatians 5:7 Paul asks the question this way: "You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?" He teaches the answer two verses later: "A little yeast works its way through the whole batch of dough" (Galatians 5:9). A big lie has entered his mind. (See topic 37, "Lies.") Teach your men that there is another race. Teach them that perseverance comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus, "the author and perfecter of our faith" (see Hebrews 12:1-3).

Teach them to locate their authority in God's Word. Teach them that Satan knows where they are vulnerable--what makes them discontent. Equip them for the battle.
